The drowsiness scale is a common tool used by sleep centers worldwide to measure excessive daytime sleepiness. The Modalert 200 Tablet exhibits a high degree of internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The gold standard for objectively assessing daytime drowsiness is the Multiple Sleep Latency Test. The day following an overnight polysomnography, it is completed at the sleep laboratory. Five naps are provided during the day at two-hour intervals in a regulated sleep-promoting environment.
Each trial's sleep latency, or the amount of time it takes for sleep to start, is assessed, and the mean sleep latency is determined. A mean sleep latency of 8 minutes or less is indicative of pathologic sleepiness (84% of narcolepsy patients have a mean latency of less than 5 minutes), whereas normal participants have average latencies of 10 minutes or more. Again, not always within the normal range, Modafresh 200 raised the sleep latency times by approximately 3 minutes in several studies.
